We are seeking three screeners (open to both members and non-members) and one lay moderator (open to non-members only) to support our fitness to practise process. These independent roles are essential in maintaining professional standards and public trust in the environmental health profession.

Key responsibilities

  • Review and assess fitness to practise complaints
  • Investigate cases impartially, ensuring fairness and transparency
  • Apply CIEH’s Code of Ethics and fitness to practise rules
  • Determine whether complaints meet the real prospect test (both in relation to facts and current impairment)
  • Make independent decisions and uphold public confidence in the profession

The ideal candidates will have:

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
  • Experience in evaluating evidence and making impartial judgments
  • An understanding of professional standards and ethics
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail
  • Commitment to fairness, diversity, and inclusion

Candidates do not need a background in environmental health but must demonstrate experience in decision-making and evidence evaluation.

Time commitment and remuneration

  • The roles are flexible and remote, requiring up to 28 hours per year
  • Paid per case reviewed (in line with CIEH’s fees policy)
