Our local authority client in South Wales is seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Health/Food Safety Officer to join their team on an interim basis. The primary focus of this role is to conduct reactive complaints and investigations of food premises with risk ratings of A-E. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest standards of food safety within the borough.

 

This is covering a period of sickness absence in the team. initial 3 months.

Preferably with experience of applying the devolved food legislation in Wales including the statutory food hygiene rating scheme.

 

Responsibilities:

Reactive Complaints and Investigations:

  • Conduct thorough and timely investigations in response to reactive complaints related to food safety concerns.

  • Assess and manage risks associated with food premises rated C-E, taking appropriate enforcement actions when necessary.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders and teams to address and resolve identified issues.

Proactive Visits and Inspections:

  • Work closely with the commercial team to undertake proactive visits and inspections of food premises across the borough.

  • Provide expert advice to businesses on food hygiene practices, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

  • Identify areas for improvement and recommend measures to enhance food safety standards.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Demonstrate substantial experience in conducting food inspections on behalf of a local authority.

  • Maintain a fully up-to-date competency matrix and engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to stay abreast of the latest developments in food safety regulations and practices.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Hold either a BSc/MSc in Environmental Health or a Higher Certificate in Food Control.
  • Proven experience in the field of environmental health, specifically in food safety inspections.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess and manage risks effectively.

  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with businesses, colleagues, and external agencies.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting.

  • Thorough understanding of relevant legislation and regulations governing food safety
