Senior Environmental Health Officer – Community Protection

Environmental Health and Licensing

37 Hours per week, Permanent Contract

Salary range: £38,157 to £42,656 per annum plus £2,907 Car Allowance per annum.

Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience     

An opportunity has arisen to work in the Community Protection team of the shared Environmental Health Service of Rother and Wealden District Councils; the area covers much of the rural area of outstanding natural beauty of East Sussex on the South Coast bordering on to and surrounding Eastbourne and Hastings and includes the towns of Bexhill, Crowborough, Uckfield, Battle, Hailsham and Rye.

The Community Protection team investigates an interesting and varied range of pollution and nuisance issues, including community related anti-social behaviour, responds to planning and licensing consultations, enforces Pollution Prevention Controls and is involved in assessing and considering air quality.  The Council wants people to be able to live in a safe and fair community and to protect public health. Our Service has a crucial role in helping to deliver this aim.    

The Community Protection team sits within a traditional Environmental Health Service that includes the Food and Health and Safety, Private Sector Housing and Licensing Teams.  There are offices based in both Hailsham and Bexhill. Members of the team work flexibly, combining work from home with site visits and working in the office at least 2 days a week. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responding to complaints, dealing with a programme of inspections and responsible for specialist activities and cases, achieving annual inspection targets
  • Allocating work within the team and being responsible for the performance of officers of the team and monitoring workflow. Ensuring written procedures are followed.
  • Ensuring enforcement work is carried out promptly and progressed in accordance with the Council’s policies, delegation scheme and Government advice and the relevant legislation, and authorising the enforcement of other Officers
  • When Duty Manager receiving and allocating all communications and ensuring all matters are dealt with correctly in accordance with service plan performance indicators, quality manual, written procedures, Statutory Guidance and relevant legislation

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental Health and registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board or CIEH as an environmental health practitioner or Chartered Member of the CIEH on appointment
  • Substantial post-qualification experience (with a specialism)
  • Experience of presenting at committees and/or evidence at Court
  • Ability to plan effectively across a wide range of service activities
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal & written)
  • Strongly motivated with ability to work well under pressure and balance priorities
  • Understanding of local government environment and legislation
