Environmental Protection Officer Level 1 / Level 2

Salary from and to: Grade G7 / £30,296 (Level 1) to G8 / £38,223 (Level 2)

Hours: 37

Contract: FT

Location: Wigan Life Centre (South)

Your role:

We are looking for someone who wants to join our Environmental Protection Team as an Environmental Protection Officer (EPO); depending upon your experience you will be appointed as either an EPO Level 1 or Level 2.

To apply for the EPO Level 1 (G7) you will be a graduate with an environmental degree, such as Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Management or Geography.

You will be prepared to undertake further training whilst in the EPO Level 1 role in order to progress to the EPO Level 2 role. The EPO Level 1 position is a temporary 2 year position during which you will undertake training and gain the experience needed to move to the EPO Level 2 position.

To apply for the EPO Level 2 (G8) role you will need an environmental degree and at least two years’ experience of the following:

• planning consultations, especially for air quality and noise.  

• environmental permitting.

• acoustics.

The Environmental Protection Team who are responsible for:

• responding to planning consultations for air quality, noise and land contamination

• air quality monitoring and reporting

• Environmental Permitting by inspecting businesses and issuing/amending permits.

• Liaising with Greater Manchester air quality colleagues on air quality improvement initiatives.

About you:

You will be a confident and a highly motivated team player with a good eye for detail and a sound knowledge of environmental protection legislation and associated guidance.  You will have initiative and sound judgment and be able to work across a broad technical area and in a range of environmental health functions. 

You’ll have excellent interpersonal skills allied with the ability to listen, explain, negotiate and influence.
