The Council of the Isles of Scilly is offering a unique opportunity to gain experience across all environmental health disciplines in an island location for a Graduate Environmental Health Practitioner or Technical Officer

This temporary role provides administrative, technical, and operational support across a wide range of disciplines, on the Isles of Scilly.

As an integral member of the Regulatory Services team, you will support in the delivery of services in various functions of Environmental Health. This includes the maintenance of the Environmental Health IT functions and effective utilisation of specialised software, Database monitoring and webpage updates, Customer service requests, Frontline operations and further support to the Head of Regulatory Services as required.

This role will initially be for a 12–18-month period to cover the Technical Officer: Environmental Health role.

There is no other career like environmental health and this position covers all five disciplines: Environmental Protection, Health and Safety, Food Safety, Public Health, Housing, and a whole lot more. 

A typical week for the council’s environmental health officers on the islands might include inspecting a food business and awarding their food hygiene rating, sampling and risk assessing a private water supply, investigating a serious accident at a local workplace or inspecting conditions at a house of multiple occupation or a private sector rented property to ensure it is free from damp and mould.

It might also include working to contain an outbreak of an infectious disease, responding to a complaint about noisy neighbours, monitoring local air quality and jumping on board to inspect a fishing vessel.
