Colchester is Britain’s First City and Britain’s Newest City. A wealth of heritage buildings, coastline and Constable countryside surrounds a modern City that is rapidly changing to match our thriving population growth.

We have a new vision to modernise our own services through team cultures that will meet the future needs of the city. This is an exciting time for us.

We are seeking officers to join our Environmental Protection, Healthy Homes and Private Sector Housing Teams.

We would expect candidates to have the relevant formal qualifications described in the relevant Job Accountability Statement (JAS). We are also keen to hear from you if you have completed your degree in Environmental Health but not yet completed your professional qualification route. We will support you to achieve your professional qualification.

However, the teams are established and we can offer support to the right candidates who demonstrate the required aptitude and behaviours, if they require further training and development.

Environmental Protection Officer in Environmental Protection team

We are seeking an Environmental Protection Officer who will bring a supportive and solution-focused approach to blend into our working practices.

We promise a varied and interesting workload which includes managing a caseload of investigations, customer requests and enforcement referrals, in addition to advising on planning and licensing consultations. There is also the opportunity to improve and protect the quality of the environment including contaminated land, air and water quality.

For an informal discussion about this role please email Leigh Newman, Environmental Protection Manager-  mailto:leigh.newman@colchester.gov.uk

Grants and Loans Officer in Healthy Homes team

Our “Healthy Homes” team provide vital work delivering a range of financial assistance schemes to improve housing conditions for some of our more vulnerable households.

We have a large Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) programme and offer other discretionary forms of financial assistance to eligible residents. We are seeking an officer who can support our residents to remain safe and independent in their homes.

You will provide effective technical surveying and advice to enable adaptation, improvement and repair work to homes (with grant or loan aid). We are looking for an individual that can process grant and loan enquiries from end-to-end after receipt progressing inspections, detailed specifications and technical drawings, contractor quotes, applications for permissions and monitoring works until completion.

For an informal discussion about this role please email Jon Parsons, Healthy Homes Manager – mailto:jon.parsons@colchester.gov.uk

Environmental Health Officer or Private Sector Housing Officer in Private Sector Housing team

We recognise that housing conditions need to be addressed as a determinant of health if we are to reduce the inequalities that exist across the City.

The Private Sector Housing team is being expanded to address these issues. We are seeking a qualified Environmental Health Officer or Private Sector Housing Officer to join our established Private Sector Housing team.

This role may work across HMO licensing and enforcement, reactive enforcement or proactive project work.

For an informal discussion about this role please email Anna Watson, Private Sector Housing Manager- mailto:anna.watson@colchester.gov.uk

In return, we are happy to talk about flexible working arrangements. You could blend home, remote, office and site working. These are all full-time posts at 37 hours per week, but we are open to discussing “any hours” flexibility, allowing for individual work/life balance, such as part time or 9-day fortnights.

In addition to the basic salary, a Market Forces Supplement is currently applied to certain roles for eligible candidates. Other employee benefits include:

• Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme choice.

• Annual Leave entitlement up to 26 days a year.

• Additional leave on the 8 public holidays.

• Extra statutory leave for 2 days during the festive season.

• The ability to add up to 2 “flex days” off each month.

• Options to purchase additional days of holiday.

• Our new “Wagestream”, which allows pre-tax saving with attractive interest rates; or can be used to take your salary early if an unexpected personal expense arises.

• 100% payment of one professional membership.

• Mileage and subsistence allowance payments.

• Tax-free cycle schemes.
