Licensing Officer (Private Sector Housing)

About Us

The London Borough of Merton is seeking Licensing Officer for the Private Sector Housing team.  You will be one of the first members of a completely new team that is being created within Housing. We are looking for enthusiastic people with strong technical skills to join us and to work on a wide range of tasks. Merton is situated at the end of Northern line and has excellent links with the surrounding area.

What will you do?

As Licensing Officer for the Private Sector Housing Team, you will support the team in processing licence applications for a range of private rented sector properties including houses of multiple occupation (HMOs). You will assess applications and provide support and guidance to applicants, dealing with queries to achieve resolution. You will play a key role in the Team enforcement activity such as preparing case information to support the issue of Civil Penalty Notices, or prosecutions as appropriate, and give evidence in Court as necessary, providing reports, information, advice or guidance as required.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a creative thinker who can work using their own initiative whilst being responsive to and supporting the work of the enforcement service. You will be able to assess information against compliance criteria & communicate effectively with customers and professional organisations.  You will be able to review and resolve complaints and enquiries and utilise a range of sources for information to support the enforcement activities of the team. You will contribute towards the on-going development and review of processes & procedures for private rented property licensing.

What you can expect from us.

  • A flexible approach to working arrangements to help you achieve a greater work/life balance, including a 35-hour working week, and flexitime scheme which permits accrued hours to be taken as additional “flexi-leave” days.
