Salary:   £26,348 to £40,478 pa (dependent upon experience and qualifications)

Hours:   37 hours a week

Contract:   Permanent

Based: Lewes and Eastbourne

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Specialist within Lewes and Eastbourne Council’s Regulatory team.

You will be joining a busy, friendly, and professional team with prospects to gain experience in a wide range of subject areas.

Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing a wide range of legislation and providing advice in line with Council policy and government requirements.

You will be expected to work on a set caseload and must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, have a practical outlook and show initiative and be willing to be part of a dynamic team.

The work includes risk-based inspections, project work promoting the LA/HSE partnership priority areas and local initiatives, reactive work such as investigation of complaints, workplace accidents, and proactive work with event organisers.

You will identify contraventions, execute appropriate enforcement activity based on assessed risk, and where necessary, prepare reports and evidence for legal proceedings and giving evidence in court.

Demonstrable experience in health and safety enforcement is essential along with an appropriate health and safety qualification. You will have excellent communication skills as well as the willingness and ability to initiate formal action where necessary. 

It is essential you can analyse and interpret complex information, make objective assessments, and regulate in a proportionate way. It is also essential you can communicate clearly and effectively, be well-organised and committed to high standards of customer care.

You must have a comprehensive knowledge of the technical and legal aspects of the role and will hold a qualification relevant to health and safety at work enforcement and investigative work. A working knowledge of all Environmental Health disciplines is also required.

Applicants will have a degree/diploma in a relevant subject.

Driving license and own vehicle essential.
