Environmental Health Practitioner

Grade/Salary ME13 £42,795 - £45,834 per annum inclusive + £963 essential car user allowance

Merton, Wandsworth and Richmond have joined forces to become a unique environmental health service known as the Regulatory Services Partnership (RSP). This makes us one of the largest Environmental Health Services in London with over 6,500 food businesses, a diverse character and a variety of high profile and interesting venues, including Wimbledon Tennis, AFC Wimbledon, Twickenham Rugby, Battersea Power Station, New Covent Garden and Hampton Court Flower Show.

Due to our commitment to career development and the recent promotion of 2 officers we now have 2 exciting opportunities available for talented and enthusiastic professionals who feel inspired about joining an organisation that is passionate about delivering excellent Food and Health and Safety services.

The candidates will hold a BSc or MSc in Environmental Health, or equivalent and be EHRB registered.

The duties of the post include the inspection of all category food premises and, in addition, Reg (EC) 853/2004 approved premises, the investigation of food hygiene and standards complaints, sampling of foodstuffs, preparation of health certificates for export, following up infectious disease allegations and outbreaks and investigating workplace accidents and complaints. Successful candidates will also put their health & safety knowledge to use working with colleagues in the Licensing team where they will be inspecting licensable special treatments establishments.

This post may involve some out of hours’ work, including occasional weekend work, but in return, we are able to offer flexible hybrid working and touchdown bases in each of the 3 boroughs.

The successful candidates will display a commitment to robust enforcement actions using the full range of available powers. Experience of preparing prosecution files in both food and health and safety would be advantageous. They will possess good verbal and written communication skills, be self-motivated with a demonstrable commitment to meeting given targets and the needs of the Regulatory Services Partnership. This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a varied and forward-thinking shared service with enthusiastic and supportive colleagues, and to develop your existing skills.

Merton Council offers excellent holiday entitlement and a competitive salary along with and a Local Government Pension Scheme.

We are committed to:

  • promoting equality of opportunity and social inclusion
  • eliminating unlawful discrimination
  • promoting good relations between employees and communities of all backgrounds.

We are situated in the Merton Civic Centre, opposite to Morden Underground Station which is on the Northern Line. We are also a 10 minutes' walk from Morden Road Tram Stop and both Morden South and South Merton Railway Stations.

We are also near Wimbledon which is part of The London Borough of Merton.

For an informal discussion about these posts please contact the Food and Safety Manager, Mrs Laura Aston on 020 8288 5670
