About us

Camden is building somewhere everyone can thrive, by making our borough the best place to live, work, study and visit. Because, we’re not just home to the UK’s fast-growing economy. We’re home to the most important conversations happening today. And we’re making radical social change a reality, so that nobody gets left behind. Here’s where you can help decide a better future for us all.

The role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join Camden’s expanding private sector housing team.

Are you passionate about improving living conditions for residents? Are you enthusiastic to take an enforcement-based approach in your work? Are you looking to develop your experience in preparing legal bundles or Banning Orders? Would you like to join one of London’s leading private sector housing teams? If your answer is yes to any of these then you may be the kind of EHO we are looking for.

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic environment health practitioner, or a qualified graduate working towards their Chartered status, to join our Reactive team. You will be required to inspect properties in response to complaints, prepare enforcement notices and schedules of work, serve Civil Penalty notices and attend the first tier tribunal when necessary.

You will manage a mixture of reactive cases such as complaints about disrepair and investigate offences in relation to HMO’s. We will provide you with plenty of opportunities for training and to maintain your CPD requirements.

If you are motivated, professional in your approach with good organisational skills then Camden could be the place for you. You’ll be joining a friendly team committed to providing safe and healthy housing. At Camden we embrace teamwork and personal development and you will have the opportunity to develop your skills across a range of fascinating challenges.

About you

To be considered for this post you must be a qualified Environmental Health Practitioner (holding an EHRB Certificate of Registration or Chartered status) or a qualified graduate who holds a BSc or MSc in Environmental Health enrolling on the CIEH’s Chartered Practitioner Programme. Applicants who are not EHRB registered or do not have Chartered status will start on a lower grade and accompanying salary until they become chartered. Support, training and fees for candidates enrolled on the Chartered Practitioner Programme will be provided by the Council.

The ideal candidate will have a background in enforcement and a detailed knowledge /understanding of the Housing Act 2004 and other housing legislation used to manage poor housing conditions and improve standards. You will be trained on HHSRS and have a good understanding of assessing housing conditions.

We are looking for a committed, flexible and self-motivated team player to work in a busy, high-profile environment delivering housing enforcement. You will have the ability to monitor and manage your own casework, make timely decisions and deliver agreed outcomes. Crucially you will have excellent negotiation, verbal and written communication skills and experience in explaining legislation, procedures and requirements to a wide range of stakeholders including landlords, agents and residents. The ability to use IT systems and databases to record, monitor and communicate information is essential. Experience of software systems and applications connected with case management is desirable though not essential.
