Post No. PE046 - Environmental Health Officer

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Health Housing team. The team is responsible for the regulation of the private rented sector, including Houses in Multiple Occupation, and resolving a range of domestic and commercial public health/environmental issues. We have a successful Additional HMO Licensing Scheme that is in its third term and the Renting Homes (Wales) Act is likely to add another dimension to the work of this team from December.

You will hold a degree or diploma in environmental health, have sound knowledge of housing legislation and ideally have experience in an environmental health role. The post holder is required to hold a suitable HHSRS assessment qualification or be willing to achieve this within an agreed timescale after appointment.

This post requires you to demonstrate effective communication and negotiation skills; be able to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with people, be flexible, have customer service skills and be confident with regulatory enforcement. You will be capable of organising and prioritising work to meet deadlines and you will operate in a self-sufficient manner. The post holder will have a high standard of problem solving and decision-making skills.

Newport is a vibrant City with a bold vision to maintain a place where people choose to live, work, and stay. Newport City Council’s success can be attributed to forward thinking, a positive approach and the Council aims to deliver high-quality services that are continuously improving. This post offers a wide range of experience, challenges, and personal and professional development to the successful applicant.

In return for your commitment, we offer an open, friendly working environment with modern working practices and systems. Benefits include a generous annual leave entitlement, professional development, flexible and agile working, and free on-site parking
