Coventry

About the team

Coventry has a rapidly expanding population, a buoyant and growing private rented sector; a key strategic priority for Coventry City Council is to keep residents safe and tackle poor housing conditions.

The Council has recently undertaken a review of its Housing Enforcement team and as a result is recruiting an Environmental Health Officer for the Property Licensing team. The team sits within the wider Property Licencing & Housing Enforcement Team with this post dedicated to dealing with all aspects of housing enforcement and licensing relating to houses in multiple occupation.

The department is forward thinking and ambitious, prepared to enforce current and new legislation to raise standards within properties and ensure the residents of Coventry live in safe healthy homes. We were the 1st council in the country to issue a financial penalty under the new MEES Regulations and have recently attended the First Tier Tribunal in an application for a banning order against a rogue landlord.

We are based in the brand new One Friargate office building, within the City Centre and we’re embracing flexible working practices. Apart from your inspections, we expect you to spend just 1 day per month in the office with your all colleagues on our “office day”.

If you are motivated to make a difference and professional in your approach, Coventry could be the place for you.

What is the job role?

Do you want to make a difference?

Do you hold a CIEH accredited degree or masters in Environmental Health?

We are looking for an Environmental Health Officer who wants to help make a difference to HMO dwellings in the city. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team undertaking the whole range of enforcement activities within the private rented sector.

We are equally keen to hear from graduates who have recently graduated an environmental health degree, including those graduating in Winter 2022 if completing the Masters. No prior experience is needed as full training will be provided.

Who are we looking for?

This role offers an opportunity to work in a busy high-profile environment and ideally, we would like our Environmental Health Officers to have experience in dealing with the inspection and enforcement of legislation relating to housing disrepair.

As an Environmental Health Officer or graduate, you will understand the key requirements of the Housing Act 2004 and procedures for enforcing standards in HMOs. Attention to detail is key so having the ability to record and provide information with accuracy is a distinct advantage.

You will possess excellent organisational skills and be able to prioritise their work. You must be committed to a high standard of service delivery and have excellent communication skills.
