Senior Safety Officer

The London Borough of Newham benefits from having a very diverse community, is well positioned with access to major rail and road networks in London and the south east, including the new Elizabeth Line, a direct route to St. Pancras and City Airport. Newham is the home of the multi-purpose London (formerly Olympic) stadium, now the home of West Ham United FC, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP). In the south there is the development of the Royal Docks, now the base for the GLA and the expansion of the ExCel Exhibition Centre.

We also have Westfield Stratford City, a shopping centre in Stratford, which opened on 13 September 2011. With a total retail floor area of 1,910,000 square feet (177,000 m2), it is the largest urban shopping centre in the UK by land area and the 4th-largest shopping centre in the UK by retail space. Westfield Stratford City is adjacent to the London Olympic Park, International Quarter London, East Village, Stratford Regional and Stratford International stations. The shopping centre is part of a large multi-purpose development project called Stratford City. It is promoted as contributing significantly to the local economy, with the creation of up to 10,000 permanent jobs including 2,001 going to local people.

Faced with the challenge of ensuring local businesses receive the support and encouragement necessary to meet the requirements of Health and Safety legislation, we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic fully qualified Environmental Health Officer/EHPs/ Senior Safety Officer with experience of  Health & Safety enforcement and licensing work.

As a Senior Safety Officer/EHO you will be responsible for investigating and managing a varied caseload, including carrying out routine or unplanned visits and inspections to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and taking the lead for developing, implementing and enforcing policies in connection with the health and safety function. This role will contribute to the delivery of Health and Safety function(s) within the Health & Safety Enforcement Team including managing effective investigation and resolution of cases.

You will deliver appropriate interventions and keep abreast of all relevant new and draft legislation, advice, regulations, training updates and other developments relevant to delivering the Council’s Health & Safety service.

You will be self-directing; taking responsibility for your own learning and development and confidently identify opportunities for innovation to improve the service. You will also get involved in projects that improve the services response to risk reduction and the impact of non-compliance on the community.

You will respond to complaints from the public relating to health and safety issues including massage & special treatment premises and Primary Authority (PA) related matters.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, and you should possess good I.T. skills. We are looking for enthusiastic, responsible team players, who are committed to high standards of customer care who can work unsupervised and perform well to targets/deadlines.

A full driving licence is considered essential
