Trading Standards, Food & Safety Manager

Croydon, Surrey, United Kingdom

Grade 17 (£58,173 - £60,366)

We are looking for an exceptional Service Manager who will report to the Head of Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing

This is an exciting time to be working in Croydon. As we emerge from the impacts of the pandemic, we face an unprecedented challenge in shaping the recovery and sustainable growth of our borough. Croydon Council is also building back from previously declaring a S114 notice and we are having to work innovatively, build partnerships and strengthen ties with local communities, businesses, and the wider society, working towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for the whole borough. This is a demanding but rewarding role which will bring benefits to the people who live and work in Croydon.

You will be a qualified Environmental Health Officer with a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health and with recent frontline and regulatory management experience. You will have sound Public Safety and commercial/workplace Health & Safety knowledge. You will have an understanding of the safety advisory group process (for example in respect of a football stadium and public events) and will have knowledge of sports ground safety legislation, practices and crowd management. Your team also has the responsible authority role under relevant licensing legislation and the team also has responsibility for compliance in a variety of licensed premises, such as special treatments and premises licensed under the Licensing Act 2003. You will be capable of providing guidance and support in all service related matters. The particular service area has joint management and therefore Trading Standards and a significant part of the Food Safety element is not the focus of this role.

You will have practical experience of managing a busy commercial/regulatory team and experience of the management of a local authority food inspection programme. The post has budget responsibility and you will therefore need to be able to exercise sound financial management. The post holder will have direct line management responsibility for a team of frontline officers responsible for the delivery of key environmental health functions in the borough.

Just as important will be your values, attitude and approach and the ability to work collaboratively with politicians, colleagues, partners, and local businesses to ensure that our residents receive the best possible life chances and excellent services. You will have outstanding communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively to drive service change and develop partnerships and demonstrate an ability to develop impactful, sustained partnerships that deliver an effective and efficient service. You will be a self-motivated, enthusiastic professional with strong leadership skills.

For an informal conversation, in the first instance please contact Michael Goddard at Michael.goddard@croydon.gov.uk

Closing date Sunday 5 June at 11:59pm
