Contract: Permanent

Would you like to lead an ambitious environmental protection service in London?

  • Exciting and challenging work environment – lots of variety and opportunities to stretch your capabilities
  • Career progression – we provide training and courses to help you improve your potential
  • A range of staff benefits, including flexible working options, discounted gym membership, a tax-free bike scheme, discounts in local retail outlets, and interest-free travel loans.

We are looking to recruit a manager to head up our Air Quality & Environmental Protection Service. Environmental quality is a priority for the Council and this role will play an important part in building on the progress that the Council has had in recent years in tackling air pollution in the borough and improving the local environment for our residents.

The role includes managing our air pollution monitoring network and delivering our air quality action plan, responsibility for our contaminated land strategy, and leading on all aspects of our noise service. This work will integrate with our climate emergency work, a key corporate priority.

Displaying excellent verbal and written communication skills, and flexibility in working patterns and practices, the successful candidate will be able to use evidence and knowledge to support accurate, expert decisions and advice, and understand how this role fits in with and supports organisational objectives.

Ideally, you’ll have a relevant environmental health or noise qualification and/or experience of delivering local authority environmental protection services, but we’re very happy to receive applications from anyone with relevant knowledge and enforcement experience. The Council will offer appropriate support to successful candidates in their professional development.

About Waltham Forest

There is a real buzz about our corner of London. Our distinctive culture-led approach to economic growth and regeneration is at the heart of our ambitious plans as a Council. We are intensely ambitious for Waltham Forest, investing in the Borough’s future, and creating a legacy that will benefit our residents for years to come.

 Equal Opportunities

Waltham Forest is a diverse borough where diversity is valued and is integral to both, service delivery and employment of its staff. The Council is proud of its rich mix of communities and as the largest employer in the area, it works hard to respond to the changing needs of its population. We use our statutory duties on race, gender and disability equality and best practice in respect of age, faith and sexual orientation to ensure equality of opportunity in the workplace. The Council is committed to meeting its 4 equality objectives: - Promoting equality of opportunity - Opposing all forms of discrimination, intolerance and disadvantage - Ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse communities of Waltham Forest at all levels. - Providing fair, appropriate, accessible and excellent Services to all. Respecting Diversity is a core Council value. To support the above and reduce the risk of bias in its recruitment activities, the council is operating an anonymous shortlisting process, which hides personal information that can identify individuals until their application has been considered for shortlisting. The council also operates a scheme whereby, for jobs graded up to and including scale SO2, internal candidates are considered first. This includes those candidates who self-identify as having a disability for the purposes of the Disability Confident scheme. For more information, please refer to our recruitment and selection policy.

How to apply

The council’s preference is for on-line application forms. However, if you have a disability and are unable to complete an on-line application, please ring 0208 496 4227 who will be able to arrange an alternative.
