Hackney is growing fast into one of the busiest and most vibrant night time economies in London. From noise, odour and smoke nuisance to Licensing and planning contraventions. To tackle these growing problems, Hackney’s Environmental Protection Team is at the forefront addressing all these issues and more.

We now have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Environmental Protection Officer to work within the Business Regulation Department in the Neighbourhoods and Housing Directorate to make Hackney a safe place for both visitors and for its residents.

You should have a full UK Driving Licence (if not), other business travel will be covered with an Oyster card.

As Senior Environmental Protection Officer, you will respond to complaints about noise, light, smoke, odour and other nuisances from the commercial sector of the borough.  This is an important part of our work to make Hackney cleaner, safer and greener. Using your expert advice we hope to stop pollution issues starting in the first place.

We need someone who is up to date with current legislation and best practice. You should be ambitious for the potential of this service and take a pioneering approach to putting in place new initiatives that will support our work.

You will have a degree or equivalent in Environmental Health or similar, and post qualification experience of noise and application consultation work.

Your role includes but not limited to the following; Commercial Nuisance Complaints - You will manage a caseload from complaint handling through to investigation, resolution and preparation for court proceedings if needed. You should be an effective communicator, able to hold your own at public meetings and liaise with our diverse communities. You will be responsible for the service of legal notices under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Control of Pollution Act 1974 and any relevant legislation that is appropriate to secure successful resolution to ongoing complaints.
