As an Environmental Engineer (Electric and Magnetic Fields Specialist) you will provide internal and external advice and guidance regarding the potential impact of electricity transmission assets on the environment and the technical issues associated with operating assets in proximity to third parties.  You will become a technical authority for Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF) issues associated with the ongoing operation of transmission plant, with occasional requirements to manage Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues as well.

As part of our hybrid working approach, this role offers a mix of office working in Warwick and home working.

Key Accountabilities

• Support National Grid’s strategic relationships with government, research bodies and campaign groups to ensure future legislation does not disproportionately constrain our operations.
• Contribute to international research bodies and Standards committees to further our understanding of the impact of our operations on people / the environment, and potential mitigations against these impacts.
• Contribute to international projects to preserve industry knowledge of EMF.
• Maintain personal profile as a technical expert in the EMF field and provide expert external advice to enhance National Grid’s reputation and attract commercial contracts. 
• Resolve complex internal and external technical queries, under tight timescales, often for inclusion in external documents such as Environmental Impact Assessments.
• Carry out accurate and independent surveys, using specialist equipment and /or computer modelling, to:
  • Quantify issues and recommend improvement actions to reduce the impact of our operations on the public.
  • Deliver work for third parties under a commercial contract
• Represent National Grid directly with the public including home visits, public meetings, email and telephone enquiries. Convey scientifically accurate information to the public in a clear and calm manner, often in sensitive and emotionally charged situations and often to vulnerable members of the public / people with poor mental health.
• Develop new technical policies, ensure the continued appropriateness of existing technical policies, and updating these as required.
• Ensure National Grid’s compliance with internal / external policies.
• Act as an Expert Witness for EMF.
• Support the maintenance (including the update of information) of emfs.info, as directed by the Lead Environmental Engineer.
• Support the Associate Environmental Engineer with the management of the national EMF helpline on behalf of the industry.
• Provide accurate and up-to-date guidance to relevant teams across Electricity Transmission to ensure National Grid’s compliance with the industry risk assessment.

About You

You will have an understanding of EMF issues associated with operating transmission plant in proximity to the public, coupled with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a range of different technical and non-technical audiences.

The ability to develop working relationships quickly and effectively, and influence key stakeholders is essential as is knowledge and a holistic understanding of the various transmission systems and associated technologies.

With proven ability to develop, implement and communicate company-wide policy and experience leading innovation and scientific projects, you will have experience of public communications and the ability to empathise in the face of public concern.

You will have a relevant STEM degree and possess a good understanding of our statutory requirements with regards to EMF. You will also have experience of both technical and reputational risk management, and possess excellent technical report writing skills. A full driving licence is required.

A proactive, self-starter, you will have the ability to technically train and develop team members. 

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £43,500 – £55,000 – dependent on capability
