Environmental Protection Officer/Environmental Health Practitioner

Location: Buckinghamshire County Wide


Following the creation of a new Buckinghamshire Unitary Authority, exciting new opportunities have arisen in our newly formed Housing and Regulatory Services. This role will offer you the opportunity to use and develop your professional skills and experience to the full within our Strategic Environmental Protection Team.

We remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations and this role is suitable for home-based working. You will need to travel within the County to make site visits and also attend one of the main offices (Aylesbury, Amersham or High Wycombe) as required.

About us

The Strategic Environmental Protection Team is responsible for working on major infrastructure projects, air quality management, land quality, providing environmental consultancy services, private water supplies, integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC), environmental impact assessment, non-domestic nuisance, planning and licensing consultations.

About the role

Duties will cover a range of environmental protection subject areas but will involve undertaking non-domestic nuisance related investigations and being responsible for assessing the environmental merits of a wide range of planning and licensing applications. You will manage a personal caseload and be responsible for the required activity as necessary to achieve regulatory compliance. You will also be expected to provide specialist advice, guidance and support as necessary.

There may also be opportunities to work on national infrastructure projects taking place in Buckinghamshire.

You will be expected to maintain an up to date professional knowledge of appropriate legal, technical and social issues to ensure the delivery of an effective quality service. As a new service, we are constantly looking to improve our service delivery, developing new and innovative ways of working and using technology.

About you

We are looking for someone who is an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual, possessing good communication skills and a positive approach to customer care.  You will have a good level of knowledge and have practical experience working in an Environmental Protection or similar team.

Applications are welcome from those with qualifications and significant experience in environmental protection, environmental health, pollution control or equivalent.

A qualification in acoustics would be beneficial but not essential.

About the Business Unit

The Environmental Health service forms part of the Planning, Growth and Sustainability directorate.  The service encompasses all aspects of environmental health and is delivered across three teams; Strategic Environmental Protection, Housing and Domestic and Commercial.  The directorate delivers a range of services including trading standards, housing, planning, economic growth, regeneration, strategic infrastructure, transport and property.

Recently, our teams have been critical in providing a flexible response to the pandemic. As well as this monitor food safety (including awarding hygiene ratings), supporting public health and acting against nuisance. From 2019 to 2020, the service responded to over 8,100 environmental health requests.
