Student Environmental Health Officer

Full Time - 37 hours per week

Ref: H225

The opportunity has arisen for this vacancy within the Environmental and Community Protection.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Student Environmental Officer who will play a key role in the delivery of high quality Environmental Health services within the small but busy Environmental Health Team whilst undergoing a programme of academic and practical training.

The position is available as an apprenticeship for those with no previous work experience, or for those seeking to change careers or enhance their current career path.

Before you apply you must have an unconditional place on a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) recognised Environmental Health degree course (either BSc or MSc), or be enrolled, or part way through such a course. Evidence of this must be provided with your application, failure to demonstrate this requirement will result in your application not going beyond the first stage of shortlisting.

Note: The Council will not reimburse any tuition fees already paid by the successful candidate or pay any arrears but will pay any ongoing tuition fees after commencement of employment.

To enable this opportunity to be open to as many candidates as possible we welcome applications from:

  • A levels students that secured a place on CIEH accredited BSc course.
  • Those with vocational skills seeking a professional career where the skills of employment such as time keeping, problem solving, team work and experience of working with the public are transferrable.
  • Those seeking to change a career, this may be a change of profession entirely that has transferrable skills e.g. building surveyor, laboratory technician, acoustician, health professional, fire officer, pest control etc.
  • Those part-way through a CIEH accredited BSc/MSc course, the requirement of the role would be that on-going studies are conducted on a part-time basis whilst employed during non-academic time.
  • Those that are already professional practitioners in one of the areas of Environmental Health such as health and safety advisors/managers (with enforcement experience); housing officers (with HHSRS), licensing officers, nuisance officers (with acoustic diploma), food safety officers (e.g. Ordinary/Higher Certificate in food premises inspections) but do not hold the BSc/MSc qualification and are seeking to become a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer.

The salary package will be reflective of any professional qualifications and experience that the successful candidate may have and the relevance those qualifications/experience are to the Environmental Health team. Or where an applicant may be in their academic studies.

Given the very wide and diverse backgrounds applicants may have it is not possible at this stage to give a definitive list that matches salary expectations to qualifications/experience or stage of their studies.

By way of example an apprentice would start at Band 2, whereas a candidate with a Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspections with EHORB endorsements and competency may be appointed on Band 8 as they will be able to undertake food hygiene inspections.

The package will include university course fees, and travel expenses incurred attending university for classes and examinations, membership fee of CIEH.

Applicants must have a driving licence that is valid in the UK.

A Standard/Enhanced check will be undertaken with the Disclosure and Barring Service to ensure that the successful candidate has no relevant convictions.

The deadline for applications will be midnight on the closing date shown in the advert details.
