We are looking to recruit 2 Environmental Protection specialists to join our small, busy and friendly Environmental Health and Licensing Team as Environmental Health (Compliance) Officers.  If you are not quite specialist yet, don’t worry we`ll support you in getting there.

The work will involve a broad range of environmental protection duties including environmental permitting, local air quality management, commercial noise nuisance, private water supplies and planning consultation responses. Burnley has a thriving manufacturing sector with a broad range of premises, a healthy night-time economy and has declared a Climate Emergency. We value our people and are committed to training and developing individuals so that we provide excellent services across our community.

If you are a qualified EHO, or have equivalent qualifications in an environmental protection discipline, with experience as a regulator, and also have a passion for improving the environment, we would like to hear from you.

You must have the ability to analyse and interpret complex legal and technical information and translate it so that businesses understand what they need to do and why. You must also have the ability to make objective assessments and regulate in a proportionate way.  You will also need good communication skills, be well-organised and committed to high standards of customer care. If you have the appropriate skills and experience, we can offer a fantastic opportunity for you within our team.

The posts will be based in the Council’s Parker Lane Offices within Burnley Town Centre. Some element of homeworking is possible, within a flexi-time system. We offer 25 days holiday per year, rising to 29 after 5 years of service, and membership of the LGPS.

This is a “Politically Restricted” post under the provisions of Section 3 of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

The Council’s licensing service is delivered by a strategic partner (Liberata UK Ltd), and the successful post[1]holder will be seconded to the strategic partner.

Burnley offers a mix of urban and rural settlements on the edge of the South Pennine Moors. There is a vibrant evening and night-time economy, alongside beautiful parks and heritage buildings. We are proud of our flexible approach to work arrangements and our culture of openness in which ideas for improvement and service development are welcomed. The council operates family friendly policies, is concerned to accommodate individual’s needs and committed to professional training and personal development.

For an informal discussion on the content of the job descriptions or person specification, please email Jill Wolfendale, Principal Environmental Health Officer, at to arrange a call back.
