East Suffolk Council is a progressive, forward thinking organisation with strong values and a range of clear strategic ambitious plans to grow and develop our organisation, people and services. Sometimes referred to as a ‘Super district’, East Suffolk is home to 250,000 residents and to an exceptionally diverse economy and range of communities. This includes Freeport East, one of eight Freeports announced this year, which will act as a global hub for trade, delivering significant inward investment and driving inclusive growth to address areas of local deprivation.

We are seeking to recruit an exceptional strategic and operational Head of Service to join our leadership team, providing direction to our excellent Environmental Services and Port Health teams. With responsibility for a wide range of environmental services, corporate responsibility for health and safety and wellbeing, and one of the largest Port Health teams in the country currently undergoing a period of rapid growth, it is an exciting time to join the Council.

Alongside ensuring the Council’s statutory responsibilities in the regulation of environmental protection, food safety, health and safety (both internally and for outsourced contracts) and port health are met, you will be involved in ensuring environmental expertise for major infrastructure projects such as Sizewell C and the Lowestoft Flood Barrier. You will work with Public Health colleagues in meeting the ongoing challenges that Covid presents for our businesses and communities, along with making a significant contribution to the Council’s environmental agenda.

Additionally, you will be responsible for our nationally recognised port health authority which supports the UK’s largest container port at Felixstowe and one of the UK’s key European gateway ports at Harwich. Forward thinking and dynamic, it is at the forefront of biosecurity controls in the UK. The Port Health team are leaders in their field, and the desire for excellence extends beyond just the delivery of the Port Health service – with its leading IT system, engagement on national initiatives and new business opportunities.

You will need to be confident in managing a complex and challenging workload in a political environment and will also have high-level relationship management skills. You will have the ability to lead, inspire, motivate and manage in a fast-paced environment and to command the trust of Councillors and partners. You will also be able to work flexibly, and remotely, successfully balancing the needs and priorities of teams based throughout the district.

Our specially commissioned film showcases the career defining opportunities and quality of life that East Suffolk has to offer and the difference that you can make to our residents, communities and sector. Please click here to view the film.
