About us

East Devon is independently recognised as an outstanding place and so it follows that its council must also strive to be outstanding. Everything we do is aimed at ensuring that East Devon is a place that people want to live in, work in, visit and enjoy. Our ambition is to be an outstanding council which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment for East Devon, now and for future generations.

We will provide an excellent benefits package which includes: generous annual leave; flexi-time; and access to a Local Government Pension Scheme, salary sacrifice cycle scheme, employee assistance programme, personal healthcare scheme and our outstanding learning and development opportunities.

About the role

The work of the team is wide ranging, focussing primarily on the investigation and resolution of nuisance neighbours, allegations of antisocial behaviour, irresponsible dog ownership and various forms of environmental pollution. Our response will include engagement with complainants and offenders, education, encouragement and ultimately enforcement of the law in certain cases. The successful applicant will be responsible for a range of cases within a defined geographical area and in addition, will have a lead officer role within the team for one or more specific areas of professional activity where you would work to develop policy and procedures and act as the initial point of contact for relevant enquiries from partner agencies and other Council services.

About you

With an ability to carry a significant caseload of complex investigations which will often require a multi-agency approach you must have up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance and procedures along with excellent communication and evidence gathering skills.

Our ideal candidate will have both enthusiasm and excellent communication skills and will be experienced in working within a local government or enforcement environment with a strong emphasis on customer service. You will be able to work with minimum supervision and keen to contribute constructively to a strong team-working ethos. An ability to keep accurate records and be able to produce reports and legal case files is essential as is the ability to travel around the district and neighbouring areas.
