Senior Environmental Health Officer (Private Sector Housing)

£36,922 - £39,880

Job introduction

Subject to ensuring effective service delivery, flexible working arrangements can be agreed.

For an informal discussion, please contact Alison Perkins - Private Sector Housing Manager on 01273 292413

About the role

Brighton and Hove is a vibrant and popular place to live with a much higher than average proportion of privately rented homes, including a significant number of Houses in Multiple Occupation. We believe that our private rented sector should be well managed and that everyone has the right to live in decent, safe accommodation.

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated people to join our Private Sector Housing Team, who will share our drive to improve the management, standards and quality of private sector homes in the city. Experience of dealing with complex problems and the ability to work under pressure is essential. In return, we can offer flexible working arrangements, a great office location near the sea and excellent terms and conditions including staff discounts on good and services through out the city. We can also offer great self-development and career opportunities through our People Promise commitments.

This is an exciting opportunity to supervise a small team within the Private Sector Housing Team, and help deliver safe, well managed accommodation for residents living in private sector housing. The team is responsible for delivering HMO licensing under the national mandatory scheme, and a city-wide additional scheme for smaller HMOs; as well as dealing with requests for assistance from tenants.

You will have a full understanding of and be experienced in assessing housing health and safety defects and other environmental health issues relating to private sector housing.

You will have excellent organisational, communication and IT skills and be flexible in response to varying workload demands.

You must be a fully qualified Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP), registered as such with the Environmental Health Registration Board, or current equivalent; have several years experience relevant to the post and be a full voting member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

If you have less direct experience in this field, or are not yet a fully qualified EHP, you may be interested in our EHO or Technical Officer posts also being advertised.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.

Work Permits: We may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points-based Immigration System. Please see Gov.uk for more information on the Skilled Worker Visa.

Company information

We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as male or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.
