About the role

Leading and managing our small but dedicated environmental protection team, you will be responsible for providing an effective and comprehensive, customer-focused service dealing with environmental / animal activities permits, air quality, community protection, noise and other statutory nuisance, national assistance funerals, bathing water quality, contaminated land, pest control, found dogs, and planning/  licensing consultations matters.  You will provide guidance to professional officers on enforcing environmental protection legislation, ensuring best use of technology and resources in delivering service objectives.  You will also advise elected members on, and deal with more complex and contentious issues of, environmental protection.  This post is politically restricted.

About you

You must possess an in-depth understanding of the effective application of related legislation and enforcement processes and be qualified, as a minimum, to the equivalent of Environmental Health Officer level – ideally you will be a member of the CIEH.  In addition, you will hold and ILM level 5 or equivalent qualification in management or have equivalent experience.  Recent experience of delivering a similar service; managing and motivating a team; and reviewing, developing, implementing and monitoring environmental health policy and strategy are also essential.  You will be adept at utilising technology for service delivery and able to make timely and confident decisions on complex matters as well as having excellent communication and influencing skills.

Relocation Allowance Available

We are offering a relocation allowance on successful appointment to this post.  To qualify you must be appointed to the permanent establishment, your current residence must be 30 miles or more from the boundary of East Devon, your new residence must be located within East Devon or within 5 miles of its boundary and the move must be completed within 12 months of appointment.  The allowance is up to a maximum of £8,000 to cover actual expenditure (excluding stamp duty) associated with the relocation and will only be made if the relocation is brought about as a direct result of your appointment.  Payments will not be made to two members of the same household in the employment of the Council, and proportional repayment will be required if you leave within 3 years of appointment.  Further details are contained in our relocation policy which is available upon acceptance of a conditional job offer.
