A job opportunity has arisen within Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Protection team (Environmental Health).

As one of the largest local authorities in the UK, Birmingham is a diverse and exciting place to work with excellent opportunities created by a challenging and varied workload. You will be joining a busy, friendly, and professional team with prospects to gain experience in a wide range of subject areas as well as operate in a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic settings.

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Environmental Protection/Health Officer to join our Environmental Protection team. Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing a wide range of legislation and providing advice in line with Council policy and government requirements.

Duties will cover the full range of environmental protection subject areas but will primarily involve environmental permitting, assessing the environmental merits of planning applications, responding to applications under the Licensing Act 2003 and statutory nuisance/clean air related investigations.

Duties may also involve strategic work around local air quality management and the contaminated land regime.

Applicants will have a degree/diploma in a relevant science subject.

Additional, technical qualifications are an advantage especially within the field of acoustics and noise control.

Driving license and own vehicle essential. In June 2021 the Council will launch the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and it will be the responsibility of the applicant to check that their own vehicle is compliant as duties will involve travelling into the area covered by the CAZ. The check can be made at https://www.gov.uk/check-clean-air-zone-charge.

The service has moved to a more agile mode of working and as such the role will involve mobile working from an administrative base situated on the city centre ring road.

Interviews for this post will take place virtually via video conferencing.

Shortlisted candidates will be provided with further information.

We welcome applications from people with caring responsibilities and flexible working options will be considered.

Unless they are an EEA or Swiss citizen or their family members, already living in the UK by 31 December 2020, then they will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) instead.
