Senior Private Rented Standards Officer

X6 Permanent

Grade 7

Sheffield has around 35,000 privately rented homes.  The sector has doubled in the past 10 years, and that growth is set to continue.   The Council’s Private Housing Standards Team regulates the private rented sector in Sheffield; we advise and enforce on property conditions and management in those homes.

The Housing and Planning Act 2016 introduced the biggest suite of new powers available to us since the Housing Act 2004.  We have used those powers to continue our twin track approach of working positively with those landlords who take their responsibilities seriously, whilst taking the strongest action against irresponsible and rogue landlords.

We are looking for a Senior Officer with drive and enthusiasm to join our knowledgeable, experienced and friendly team.

This is a specialist service and applicants should have the skills and experience to undertake and enforce Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) inspections, Mandatory and Discretionary licensing schemes and Houses in Multiple Occupation.

Applicants will also:

  • Be able to understand and enforce the regulatory requirements of private landlords – but you will be equally comfortable building and maintaining positive working relationships with them.

  • Enjoy contributing to team work, but keen to take responsibility and be accountable for your own caseload.

  • Demonstrate a track record of dealing with complex cases and taking appropriate enforcement action.

  • Have experience of building and progressing cases for prosecution.

  • Have the skills to lead and support Housing Officers with complex cases and enforcement action.

For an informal discussion, please contact us and ask for a Team Manager on 0114 273 4680.

We are committed to fairness and social justice and welcome applications from everyone. We value our diverse workforce and aim to work together to make the most of our differences. Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities, which benefit you and the Council.
