Overview:

Wakefield Environmental Health are looking for Senior or Environmental Health Officer’s (S/EHO); to work in our busy team, specialising in Community Protection, Food Safety or Health & Safety. 

The new posts are temporary to help us meet demands from noise, pollution, food, health and safety and public health complaints while S/EHOs are seconded to Public Health Covid work.  Based at Wakefield One, Burton Street, Wakefield, WF1 2EB (next to Westgate Train Station) or working from home up to 5 days with all equipment provided. Wherever you choose to work from you will have a base to then visit customers across the Wakefield district.  

SEHO and EHO applicants must hold a degree or masters in Environmental Health and Chartered Institute Environmental Health (CIEH) registration.

Senior or Environmental Health Officers who are knowledgeable in one of three options below however applications from newly qualified Officers are welcome.

Community Protection Officers will take the lead for effective investigation and resolution of noise jobs, other statutory nuisance and public health complaints in the Wakefield district.  They will decide the most fitting actions to look into and resolve customer enquiries working within our procedures and within a supportive environment.  Their excellent communication skills will help them support evidence gathering with customers and giving bad news if we cannot help after a reasonable investigation.  They will resolve most complaints informally, but will use formal action when needed.

Food Safety Officers will carry out official food controls in businesses including high to low risk, large manufacturers and those needing approval. Workloads may also include audits, revisits, sampling, food fraud and complaint investigations; responding to serious food safety risks, infectious diseases and food poisoning outbreaks. Officers should demonstrate their competency as required in the Food Law Code of Practice. 

Health & Safety Officers will cover the full range of health and safety interventions, including; inspections, accident and complaint investigations and provision of health and safety advice. In addition the successful candidates may be involved in activities to support businesses with covid advice. All applicants should have experience in health and safety regulation in a local authority setting
