Temporary (Initially until 31/03/2022, possibility of extension)

We are seeking to recruit Environmental Health Officers and Environmental Health Technicians to help deliver our Environmental Regulation agenda.

Work areas include food safety, food standards, infectious disease control including Covid related work, private water supplies, health & safety enforcement including some events work. Officers are expected to work closely and liaise with a wide range of partner teams and services within and outside the council to help solve wider community issues. The Environmental Health Officer posts are senior technical roles and are expected to cover for the team Principal Officers when required as well as taking on specialist project work, so experience is vital.

We work on a multiyear partnership with an external provider to deliver lower risk food safety visits in Sheffield, so our small in-house team concentrate on higher risk/technical work, projects and training.

We are inviting applications from dedicated and highly motivated Environmental Health Officers and Environmental Health Technicians / Food Safety Officers who can work on their own initiative, deliver behaviour change in client groups and welcome continuing professional development.  We need officers with a passion to make a big difference to public health and business/consumer confidence in the city. We offer a number of chargeable services to individuals and businesses, so candidates must have a strongly positive customer care attitude and understand business realities and challenges.

You should possess excellent communication skills and have experience in managing a busy caseload with a strong track record of performance. The ability to offer accurate, concise technical advice and make that relevant for a wide client group is paramount. We encourage officers to develop strong links with partners and industry / government representatives to aid the delivery of improvements in our communities.

Applicants for the Environmental Health Officer post will require a recognised degree or diploma in Environmental Health and a Certificate of Registration from the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHORB).

Applicants for the Environmental Health Technician – Food Safety post must have, as a minimum, the EHORB Higher Certificate in Food Inspection Control (or equivalent) with an up-to-date knowledge of current food legislation.

We can offer a wide range of experience and challenges to the successful applicant as a core city with a huge range of businesses. Sheffield City Council is an employer which values, supports and encourages the development of its employees. Flexible working is the norm which has helped during the recent lockdown with most staff able to continue working from home. We encourage mobile working and are exploring online options for inspections.

The successful candidates will be able to work in the food safety or health & safety teams so we are looking at candidates that can demonstrate relevant experience in these fields.

Candidates interested in working in the food safety team should be able to demonstrate all the competencies outlined in the Food Law Code of Practice for an ‘Authorised Officer’ to undertake the range of activities’ typical of a busy, large and varied food safety department.

Candidates interested in working in the health & safety team should be able to demonstrate relevant experience in enforcing health & safety legislation including work involved in safety in sports grounds, event safety and licensing.

You must have a full driving licence and be able to travel around the City.
