Mersey Port Health Authority is currently undergoing an expansion of its service and has a number of vacancies available. The Authority is looking to recruit four (4) Port Health Officers for a fixed period of 12 months. This is for a time-specific project due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and in preparation to ensure the Authority’s readiness for additional sanitary controls at the end of the EU transition and has substantially increased the workload associated with delivering the Authority’s statutory functions.

We are inviting applications that are either experienced Environmental Health Officers looking for a new challenge or newly qualified Environmental Health Officers looking to develop their Port Health skills.  To become part of our team you will need to be enthusiastic, keen to learn and prepared to assist our current dedicated team of staff in the undertaking of our statutory functions.

The Authority is at the front line of food safety, animal, and public health control.  Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing United Kingdom legislation by means of enforcement, advice, and education.  Other responsibilities will include the enforcement of food safety legislation and International Health Regulations, including the inspection of vessels, and shellfish classification.

The ideal candidates must be highly organised and comfortable working under pressure, which includes making decisions in accordance with legislative requirements.  Excellent communication is essential along with the ability to work as part of a team.  IT proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft applications are desirable.

The main duties of the post include:

  • Monitor all imports of products of animal origin and food not of animal origin including documentary checks, inspection and sampling of products
  • Verification of certificates of Organic products at point of import
  • Ship inspections of cruise liners, ferries, merchant vessels, small passenger vessels and pleasure crafts to ensure compliance with UK and international standards
  • Infectious disease control at the Port of Liverpool and Liverpool John Lennon Airport

In return, we can offer great opportunities for training and development, flexible working options, generous leave entitlement and a pension scheme.

We reserve the right to close vacancies earlier than the specified date should we receive sufficient applications. If interested, please complete an application as early as possible.
