Some details about the role
South Lakeland District Council is seeking to recruit a Level 1 and Level 2 Specialist for Private Water Supplies within the Specialist (Environmental Protection & Licensing) Team.

The posts are based at the Council’s head offices in Kendal. South Lakeland has one of the highest numbers of private water supplies subject to local authority regulation in England and Wales and the successful candidates will work as part of a busy team.

Key duties will include visiting commercial and domestic premises and carrying out risk assessments on private water supplies. This consists of using a template, preparing written reports and carrying out enforcement action to protect public health where required.

The successful candidates will also be required on occasion to take samples of private water supplies for analysis and will be required to obtain and maintain UKAS accreditation to do so.

The successful candidates will have an understanding of the Private Water Supplies regulations and will be expected to keep up to date with any legislative changes and best practice.

What we are looking for in you

The successful candidates will:

  • Possess and maintain a good working knowledge of practices and methodologies within this specialist area
  • Be able to provide advice to colleagues, members, external organisations and the public
  • Have good interpersonal skills and experience of dealing with people in difficult circumstances
  • Be proactive in seeking out new opportunities to work with both partner agencies and local businesses to build on the successful work already undertaken by the team.
  • Have will have good IT skills and preferably have experience of using specialist software such as Civica APP

The successful candidate for the Specialist Level 1 position will, as a minimum, be educated to A level standard/NVQ 3 and ideally will have, or be working towards, a relevant professional qualification.

As a minimum, the successful candidate for the Specialist Level 2 position will be educated to degree level and because of the specific nature of the role you will have a relevant professional qualification.

In addition, the Specialist Level 2 will undertake a range of more complex cases that require specialist understanding of the Private Water Supplies regulations and how they are applied. They must be able to demonstrate and evidence this at both application and interview stage.
