Applicants must hold a degree or masters in Environmental Health and Chartered Institute Environmental Health (CIEH) registration. However candidates with alternative specific health and safety qualifications can apply for the H&S posts.

Community Protection – 1 post:

The Officer will take the lead for effective investigation and resolution of casework around noise and other statutory nuisance complaints in several wards in the district. They will decide the most appropriate actions to look into and resolve customer enquiries. Their excellent communication skills will help them support customers by gathering evidence of their issues and ensure they can give bad news in a considerate way when we cannot help after a reasonable investigation. They will resolve most complaints informally but will use formal action when needed.

Food Safety & Infectious Disease – 2 posts:

Officers will undertake official food controls/inspections/interventions in a range of ‘food’ businesses including high to low risk premises, large manufacturers & premises requiring approval. Workloads also include audits, revisits, sampling, food fraud, complaint investigations, responding to serious food safety risks, infectious disease and investigation of food poisoning outbreaks. Officers undertaking official food controls are required to demonstrate their competency as required in the Food Law Code of Practice. Considerations will be given to newly qualified Officers but up-to-date experience in official food controls is desirable for these positions.

Health & Safety – 1 post - 37 hours permanent & 2 posts - 37 hours temporary 9 month contracts:

The role covers the full range of health and safety interventions, including; inspections, accident and complaint investigations and provision of health and safety advice. In addition the successful candidates will be involved in a range of activities to support our Covid 19 response.

It is important that candidates present a “can do” attitude and flexible approach to protecting the health and safety of our local residents and working with our businesses to ensure compliance. Excellent communication skills are essential. Applicants must hold a degree in Environmental Health or an equivalent level health and safety qualification. All applicants must have experience in health and safety regulation in a local authority setting.

In summary: for all posts we are looking for Officers who take responsibility for their own learning and the team’s development. Keeping up to date with all relevant new and draft legislation, advice and other developments relevant to the Environmental Health role.

The successful applicants will need to demonstrate the Council’s core values which are Caring, Ambitious, Integrity and Respect. Whilst job knowledge is important our core values help shape what we do for each other and our residents and businesses in Wakefield.
