Senior Technical Officer – 37 hours

Flint Street, Fartown, Huddersfield, HD1 6LG

Grade 8 - 9 - £24,799 - £29,636

The advertised role is for a Senior Technical Officer (STO) based within the Air Quality team.

Air Quality is high on the National, Regional and Local agendas. There is now significant evidence that the health effects of living and working within areas of poor air quality are reducing the healthy life-spans of a large number of the population and resulting in the early deaths of tens of thousands of people. Kirklees Council has a legal duty to review and assess air quality within the district and as part of this, the authority has developed a Five Year Action Plan containing measures to improve Air Quality and reduce emissions.

You will undertake data collection and analysis to meet the council air quality monitoring needs and feed into the DEFRA reporting process. This will include maintenance of the real-time monitoring network and passive diffusion tubes.

The successful candidate will feed into the planning process, assessing applications in accordance with the West Yorkshire Low Emission Strategy Planning guidance, analysing Air Quality Impact Assessments to safeguard against unsustainable development and provide advice to planning / environmental health colleagues.

List of daily duties;

  • Maintain monitoring network
  • Collect and analyse AQ data
  • Respond to planning Application & assess Air Quality Reports associated with developments
  • Undertake Air Quality Modelling using such programs as ADMS Urban
  • Answer Customer Enquiries and Freedom of information requests
  • Work on the councils Night Time Noise Service (Maximum of 2 weekend day shifts)

Outside of the air quality role, Senior Technical Officers within Environmental Health are expected to work on the Council’s Night Time Noise Service, for which training is provided. Shifts on this service are spread amongst Environmental Health and as such, mandatory shifts are limited to 2 weekend days per year.
