Buckingham Futures have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Sustainability Officer in West London to focus on a range of environmental issues including carbon reduction and energy efficiency, climate change adaptation, air quality, circular economy, green economy, sustainable travel and ecology.
Principal Accountabilities:
1.Co-ordinate the development and delivery of the Council’s borough-wide environmental sustainability strategy.
2.Design and deliver effective environmental sustainabilty initiatives in partnership with residents, businesses, schools, community groups and other partners.
3.Lead on the development of corporate initiatives such as a corporate travel plan, fleet policies and a sustainable procurement policy, tools and checklist.
4.Help embed environmental sustainability in corporate policies, service delivery and operations across the Council.
5.Engage a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including directors, senior managers, elected members, other Council staff, schools, community groups, businesses, professional bodies, partner organisations and government functions on all matters relating to development and delivery of borough-wide and corporate environmental sustainability strategy.
6.Continually review, monitor and drive improvement in the performance of environmental initiatives against Borough Plan and other corporate targets.
7.Ensure that the Council fulfils EU, national and regional legal, regulatory and policy requirements in relation to environmental services and sustainability.
8.Undertake such responsibilities as may be allocated to this post from time to time by the Head of Environmnetal Strategy & Commissioning.
9.Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and all employees are required to act in such a way that at all times safeguards the health and well-being of children and vulnerable adults.
10.Carry out duties with due regard to the Council’s customer care; equal opportunities; information governance, data protection and health and safety policies and procedures.
11.Undertake any other duties commensurate with the general level of responsibility of this post.
Knowledge and Qualifications:
A relevant degree or professional qualification
Detailed knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability issues (climate change mitigation and adaptation, waste and recycling, air quality, green space and biodiversity, energy efficiency and fuel poverty), including relevant legislation, policy and best practice in an urban setting
Experience:
Experience of designing and delivering effective services for residents and businesses
Experience of devising and delivering area-wide and corporate environmental sustainability strategies, policies and initiatives, with tangible results
Experience of establishing effective multi-agency partnerships
Experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams to achieve significant, sustainable improvements and positive outcomes through internal and external partnerships
Skills and Abilities:
Excellent strategic thinking and analytical skills, able to develop and implement evidenced-based strategies, policies and projects to effect positive change
Excellent communication skills, able to communicate and debate complex issues clearly and simply with a wide range of expert and non-expert stakeholders and audiences
Able to operate effectively within democratic processes, with the political acumen and skills to develop productive working relationships with council members
Ability to manage conflicting priorities, handle a busy workload and meet frequently changing deadlines
Ability to provide in-depth policy analysis and advice.
Excellent project management and organisational skills, able to deliver and supervise multiple workstreams on time and within budget
Displays commitment to, and takes responsibility for, the direction of personal and organisational development
