Maldon District Council is seeking to employ a qualified and experienced Senior Environmental Health Specialist to join our busy Environmental Protection team.

The post holder will provide functional leadership for a multi-skilled team of specialists and have proven experience in dealing with public health, nuisance, pollution control, private sector housing enforcement and provide professional and technical advice and support to the Council’s Planning Service.

We are looking for a confident and organised individual who holds a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health (EHORB registered).  The post holder will be technically competent in this specialist area.

The post holder will be expected to take the lead in complex case work and undertake and provide technical expertise and decision making in all aspects of the role, including taking formal action where applicable. Part of the role involves preparing and presenting technical reports to Council committees as well as assisting with the development of a ‘community of practice’ including mentoring of staff to improve the delivery of the specialism and support career development.

About this role

The dimensions of this role are extensive and demanding. The service currently deals with approximately 800 – 1200 service requests annually across the whole range of environmental protection functions. The service is also responsible for routine inspections including industrial installations, caravan sites, houses in multiple occupations, private water supplies and scrap metal dealers.

The role also involves attendance at various Committees and planning appeals where necessary.

The postholder will be expected to consistently and professionally apply all policies and legislation relating to environmental protection and to maintain a high level of competence within a specialist area.  This will also involve contributing towards policy development, strategy, reviewing adequacy of procedures, coaching and mentoring of staff within the wider organisation.

As with any post of this nature, there is an expectation that from time to time the postholder will carry out such other environmental health duties as the Lead Specialist (Community) may require, including work outside of normal office hours.

In addition to a competitive salary you will be entitled to participate in the Local Government Pension Scheme, cycle to work scheme, salary sacrifice car lease scheme and will benefit from free parking. You can also receive assistance with child care, discounted local gym membership and payment of one annual professional fee (if applicable). You will also have access to a range of work/life balance policies.

Maldon District Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable groups including children, young people and adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Disclosure and Barring checks will be undertaken according to the responsibilities of the role.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, culture and experience. Applicants will be considered regardless of race, sex, disability or marital status.
