As a leading operator in our field, Hackney Markets Service deliver a ‘Best in Class’ service providing innovative ways to Develop and operate Markets and Street trading activities. This is an exciting time to join the Markets and Street Trading Team, following a year of unprecedented double digit growth in an age where our high streets are shrinking and retail chains are closing down Hackney is leading the way for other local authorities in expanding and growing our portfolio across the borough.

We are looking for a Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our team, you will either be competent at this level or a keen environmental health officer, with varied experience, looking for promotion.

You will have an important role in promoting safe practices, upholding standards and investigating a wide range of issues across the borough. This is a key role in helping us make Hackney cleaner and safer.

As Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will have responsibility for high risk food inspections as well as inspections relating to allergens and trade. You will also investigate cases relating to food borne illness and infectious disease as well as health and safety issues across the borough.

You will be part of a team within our Public Realm service. This service not only creates the first impression of Hackney, but also our enduring legacy. From ensuring our streets are clean, our parks blooming and our traffic flowing, to putting in place the foundations for a greener future. This team has an impact on everyone who lives, works and visits the borough.

We need someone who can build effective working relationships with our diverse service users, communities and other stakeholders like the HSE and FSA. You should have good communication skills and be able to negotiate on sensitive issues in a professional manner. From time to time you will need to deliver food safety training and should be able to engage a mixed audience.

You will be dealing with multiple complex issues at once. You should be able to stay level headed under pressure and prioritise a competing workload. You will need a strong understanding of project management principles to lead on projects from design through to implementation.

We need someone who thrives on challenges, with an analytic mind and experience in quality assurance and compliance. You should be a strategic thinker, keen to develop policies that supports our ambitions for the borough. On top of that, we also need someone with an eye for detail who understands the importance of accurate record keeping and effective administrative systems.

To thrive in this role, you should enjoy a hands on approach to work - most of your time will be spent out of the office on site visits. We are happy to support home based working and other flexible approaches as appropriate. You will need or will be working towards an appropriate Environmental Health Registration Board approved qualification, EHORB Certificate of Registration and evidence of CPD.
