Telford & Wrekin Council is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated fully qualified Environmental Health Officer with significant management experience, a strong enforcement ethos and yet the ability to generate income to support local businessesto achieve the highest standards.

The role is varied, you will be managing a Private Sector Housing Team comprised for three sub-teams, a residential family unit, HMO team and a proactive team.

A major focus for the authority is the improvement and maintenance of private rented sector housing standards.Better Homes for All is a key part of the current administrations manifesto promise to residents.

We have taken an innovative approach to private sector housing in Telford and Wrekin using a multidisciplinary team, using not only Environmental Health but Trading Standards powers and adding a Vulnerability Support Officer to the team.

We are looking for someone who can continue to build on the strong foundations set down, and further the approach taken to date.

Reporting to the Service Delivery Manager, the duties that the post holder is responsible for include:

  • Being responsible for the delivery of operational functions, management of direct reports, performance management, delivery of service plans and key council priorities. You will oversee legal investigations and be the lead for professional advice and guidance on all areas of Private Sector Housing and Domestic Nuisance.
  • Lead on powers under Housing and Planning Act 2016 including Civil Penalties, and be active in looking for streams of funding to support the approach taken to date.
  • Be responsible for the development of strategies, procedures and policies
  • To act as the lead officer for Private Sector Housing providing advice to heads of service, directors and council members on issues of a reputational and political nature.

Applicants must have a degree level or equivalent in Environmental Health and have EHRB registration. They must have significant management experience and should be able to provide evidence on continued professional and personal development.
