Private Sector Housing

Thanet District Council serves the beautiful coastal towns and villages in East Kent; including Broadstairs, Margate, Ramsgate and Minster, providing an array of services to over 127,000 residents.

Thanet is a great place to live and work. Our historic seaside towns of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs are rich in heritage and opportunity. With the multi-million pound Turner Contemporary Gallery, the fast speed rail link to London, and the popular Westwood Cross shopping centre - this is an exciting time to join Thanet District Council. We are determined to improve the quality of life for local people. We believe that by listening to local people, working in active partnership and by being prepared to do things in an innovative way we can accelerate improvement and best meet the challenges ahead.

All posts include generous annual leave, flexible working (some posts excluded), a 37 hour week, as well as access to the local government pension scheme.

Main Duties:

Thanet District Council is looking for two experienced and motivated Rogue Landlord Officers to join its Private Sector Housing Team. These posts will join our Rogue Landlord and Community Cohesion Section, which has been set up to pursue a number of exciting proactive housing and health interventions using an intelligence led enforcement approach. Our Rogue Landlord and Community Cohesion Section is based in a multi-agency office at the council in which Kent Police, Kent Fire & Rescue Service, Job Centre Plus, Community Safety and numerous other agencies work together to help Thanet's residents lead safer, healthier and happier lives. Working alongside our partner agencies you will use the wide range of enforcement tools at your disposal in a confident and determined manner. These posts will be attractive to anyone seeking to broaden their experience with a challenging and varied role where initiative and robust interventions are encouraged.

Essential Requirements:

  • You will have experience of using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and the enforcement options available to you under the Housing Act 2004.
  • You will also be expected to understand and be able to use alternative legislative provisions, such as that relating to statutory nuisance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, along with the ability to deal effectively with difficult conversations, are essential.
  • Applicants will hold a degree or similar qualification in housing, building surveying, or environmental health, as well as a competency certificate for HHSRS.
  • As this position will be based within a multi-agency environment, the successful applicant will be required to undergo Police Vetting and Enhanced DBS check.
  • This post requires you to have a full driving licence and own transport or requires travelling to sites in a timely manner equivalent to motor travel in your own car.
