Senior Environmental Protection Officer (2 x posts)

PO4, £42,432 - £44,373 pa

Two year fixed term contract / secondment opportunity until 31 March 2021

Hackney Council is looking for two people to help us protect our environment. As Senior Environmental Protection Officer, you will respond to complaints about noise, light and odour pollution. This is an important part of our work to make Hackney cleaner, safer and greener.

Using your expert advice we hope to stop pollution issues starting in the first place. You will help in our consideration of planning applications, advising on construction projects, temporary event notices and licensing applications. You will manage a caseload from complaint handling through to investigation and resolution, preparing for court cases as needed.

Our Public Realm service not only creates the first impression of Hackney, but also our enduring legacy. From ensuring our streets are clean, our parks blooming and our traffic flowing, to putting in place the foundations for a greener future. This team has an impact on everyone who lives, works and visits the borough.

Day to day you will be involved in site visits and assessments. When at your desk you will produce monthly management reports and respond to enquiries and corporate complaints. You should be an effective communicator, able to hold your own at public meetings and liaise with our diverse communities.

We need someone who is up to date with current legislation and best practice. You should be ambitious for the potential of this service and take a pioneering approach to putting in place new initiatives that will support our work. You will need a degree or equivalent in Environmental Health or similar, and post qualification experience of noise work.

This role will require a flexible approach as it involves a lot of site visits and some out of hours work. We encourage flexible working arrangements, including working from home, to help you best manage your own workload. You should have a full UK Driving Licence with less than six penalty points – the team shares a pool car. Other business travel will be covered with an Oyster card.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

If the opportunity of working here excites you, visit www.hackney.gov.uk/jobs-careers to apply.

Please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification.  It is essential that you include a supporting statement, addressing how your skills, knowledge and experience meet all the aspects of the post, as indicated in the job description and person specification.

Closing date: 07 April 2019, (22:59pm)

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people, as this group is currently under represented in our workforce.
