Hackney Council is looking for someone that will make a real difference to tenants’ lives. As Team Manager for Private Sector Housing, you will lead a team that has recently been restructured owing to expansion. Housing is a top priority in Hackney, this is an exciting opportunity to be involved with shaping our new approach in implementing a new streamlined process and on-line services.

One in three households in Hackney now rents in the private sector. Housing across London is experiencing unprecedented pressure, with rents rocketing as demand increases. Hackney’s Mayor has pledged to tackle poor conditions and management concerns. We are getting tough on rogue landlords and making agents fulfil their duties using new powers and expanded licensing schemes.

We need people like you - keen to make a difference, who understand the impact housing issues have on the health and wellbeing of residents. You will help us respond to our customers’ needs, providing services on-line to make our response more accessible and efficient. You will use a wide range of data and intelligence to target enforcement on properties and landlords where it matters most.

The outcome of this work can transform lives. Alongside enforcement, our active grants programme allows disabled and vulnerable residents to remain independent in their own homes. We help prevent homelessness by helping tenants stay in their homes. Above all, you will be part of our team working to ensure private sector housing is safe and well managed for the people living there.

You should have plenty of creative solutions and be motivated by the challenges we face. We need someone able to put in place new policies and procedures, who can motivate their team to take on innovative ways of working.  You should have the influencing skills to promote your team’s work internally and with other agencies.

You will be responsible for managing regulation and enforcement in private sector housing so an in-depth understanding of the relevant legislation is essential. This includes familiarity with the use of intelligence/data to support proactive enforcement. You must have experience of private sector housing regulation in a local authority context and a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health or equivalent.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work.  We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best.  We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

If you want to work in a place where you can represent our values so we achieve the best for our residents, please visit www.hackney.gov.uk/jobs-careers to apply.

When applying, there will be a number of questions relating to the post on the application form. It is essential that you complete the application questions, responding to each using examples of your skills, knowledge and experience. You are not required to submit a supporting statement or CV.

Closing date: 27th January 2019

Interviews: 7th February 2019
