Swindon is now recruiting for 3 Environmental Health Officers; 3 in a full time permanent role, and 1 in a full time fixed term contract over 2 years.


2 FTE in Healthy Neighbourhoods, 1 FTE full time permanent, 1 FTE fixed term contract

Which is where you come in: as an Environmental Health Officer in our Healthy Neighbourhoods Team you will be part of a successful team operating across the whole Environmental Protection and Housing arena. You will receive and deal with both proactive & complaint led cases covering Housing Standards, HMOs, Statutory Nuisance, Public Health, and more. You will also be expected to contribute to some more strategic work areas such as Air Quality, Environmental Noise management, Development Control, & Environmental Permitting.  You will act across a wide range of determinants every day.

You will be working as part of a holistic and multi-disciplinary Healthy Neighbourhoods team providing advice, enablement, and enforcement; as part of a wider public health delivery agenda.  This is an exciting opportunity to experience a very wide range of functions and work in a very busy, friendly, and mutually supportive team.  You will also regularly contribute to the team’s Out of Hours stand-by service dealing with active and acute enforcement cases.

With a degree, or equivalent, in environmental health, EHORB registration and membership of (or eligibility for) CIEH, you may also have a Post Graduate qualification in a subject such as Acoustics or Housing, for instance, and you will be able to demonstrate a broad technical background across a range of relevant environmental health disciplines.  You will possess excellent people skills allied with the proven ability to listen, explain, negotiate and influence.  You will have a track record of good performance in a busy environment.


1 FTE in Health Compliance (Food, Health &Safety). Permanent

Although a small Unitary Authority, we have a diverse work load, experiencing and responding to Food Fraud, Illegal meat, Allergen issues, Approvals and Health and Safety projects that will challenge and fulfil your professional skills. The Health Compliance team sits within Public Health and together with Trading Standards and Healthy Neighbourhoods forms part of the Council's Public Protection team.

Based in Health Compliance, which covers all aspects of Food, health and safety, you will be working as part of a holistic and enthusiastic team covering compliance issues for commercial businesses and residents, as part of a wider public health delivery agenda.  

As an experienced officer you will be responsible for carrying out functions across the full remit of Food Hygiene and Standards, Health and Safety, Infectious Diseases in terms of Enforcement, business support and engagement. 

You will also be responsible for undertaking complex investigations either as a lead case officer or as part of a wider team.  You will need to be self-motivated and able to work to a high standard with the minimum of supervision. You may be required to contribute to our primary authority partners work.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act – for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).
