Our client in East London is recruiting for a Sustainability and Climate Change officer to actively promote continuous improvement for sustainability and climate change within the Planning Service through assessing a range of planning applications and proposals, and working proactively and collaboratively across departments and directorate, to share knowledge, experience and information resources.


You will lead in the active promotion of best practice through: development of new approaches that embed sustainability in development management process; policy making; positively responding to the localism agenda, and through embracing innovation as well as actively work with developers to develop energy strategies and where necessary negotiate S106 cash in lieu Carbon Offset contributions.


Technical Experience / Skills / knowledge

  1. Two years experience of working in either the Planning policy or sustainabledevelopment fields


    Extensive knowledge of up to date issues regarding sustainability/climatechange legislation, policy and procedural frameworks within which the planning service operates


    Significant experience of assessing Energy and Sustainability strategies inan urban environment, including extensive knowledge of the both the BREEAM Assessment models and the SBEM calculation methodology


    Technical understanding of the development of complex energy systems inthe built environment, including CHP systems and District Heat Networks


    Able to lead and undertake project management and proven experience ofproject management techniques


    Able to analyse and interpret large and complex sets of data and/or planningapplications and derive sound conclusions


    Understanding or experience of the process of negotiating on complexplanning applications to secure community benefits.


    Able to write clear, concise letters, reports and policy documents. Shortlisting criteria.


    Able to deal with enquiries and give advice to a wide range of people insideand outside the Council


    Able to prepare and give effective presentations.


    Experience in undertaking tasks using GIS, preferably MapInfo


    Ability to work independently with minimum supervision


    Ability to advise and guide other members of the team, delegate work, underthe guidance of the Manager and take responsibility for ensuring its accurate and timely completion
    Proven excellent verbal skills


    Qualification to degree level in Environmental / Sustainability / Energy Planning
