Senior Contaminated Land Officer

Salary - Grade 10, Level 1-4 (£33,605 to £39,129 per annum)

37 hours per week, ​maternity cover

Job description

City of York Council’s Public Protection team are looking for a highly motivated person, with experience of investigating contaminated land and knowledge of its impact upon development.

You will be the council's lead officer within the environmental protection unit for Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, planning and development and complaints regarding contamination. You will be required to investigate potentially contaminated land and to give advice to the council, councillors, residents and developers. You will be required to undertake and to give training and briefings.

You must have a degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Health, Environmental Chemistry, Geology, Geography or  similar subject. You will also need a detailed knowledge and experience of contaminated land, including legislation, assessment, risk assessment, best practice, instrumentation, monitoring techniques, principles and procedures.

The service delivery is customer focussed, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is  a good understanding of IT, including geographic information systems and a full driving licence.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2 - Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.

Although working as part of a team you must be capable of working without supervision.
