About The Role

Aylesbury Vale District Council are looking for a motivated and ambitious licensing specialist to work in our Regulatory Services team.

As an experienced and highly skilled licensing specialist, you will act as the principal point of technical expertise for the Council on all statutory licensing matters (including premises licensing, taxi licensing, animal licensing and gambling) and will advise elected members and colleagues on the strategic impact of Government legislation in these areas.

In addition you will  lead the review, development and implementation of licensing policy ensuring that this contributes to our ambitious strategic vision. As such you will have previous experience of preparing and presenting technical reports to Committees and working alongside elected members to achieve successful outcomes.

You will work collaboratively and provide technical guidance to a range of internal and external stakeholders and partner organisations and will be comfortable negotiating and acting with a high degree of authority and autonomy. You will be responsible for the oversight of complex decisions on licensing enforcement action including appeals and prosecutions, and will act as the Council’s lead licensing officer in Court as required.

As well as supporting the day-to-day delivery of licensing services you will be able to demonstrate the ability to innovate and to engage others, working with them to deliver new ways of working and challenge the norm.

The ideal candidate will be a strong team player who possesses excellent communication and negotiation skills and a strong customer focus.  You must be able to manage your own workload alongside the delivery of longer term policy objectives. In addition you will demonstrate effective problem solving skills and the ability to make decisions and see them through to delivery. Previous experience in licensing services or another relevant regulatory field is essential.

The Organisation

Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) spans the northern half of Buckinghamshire and our offices are located in Aylesbury about 40 miles north west of London with direct rail links in to Marylebone.

AVDC covers the second largest local authority geographic area in England and has one of the highest housing growth rates in the UK, being located just outside the green belt.  Our Local Plan is scheduled for approval by Council this summer and makes provision for over 30,000 additional houses in the Vale.  On top of the opportunities that this growth represents we also have a number of challenging and interesting national infrastructure projects on our doorstep:

  • We are located in the East-West Oxford Cambridge growth corridor with the new Oxford Cambridge rail link passing through our area.
  • We have one of the longest stretches of the HS2 High Speed rail link passing through the Vale with all the challenges and opportunities that presents
  • Aylesbury has been nominated for Garden City status and planning for that development is currently underway.
