Technical Profile

David Newsum, EHP, freelance trainer and environmental health consultant

Where do you work and what do you do?

Nationally, running various contracts and delivering training. Currently my major contract is for the CIEH as health and safety policy officer

What attracted you to working in environmental health?

It’s a classic answer - I failed a maths degree and had to look for a job - saw pupil public health inspector advertised at Manchester - applied and was offered the full time paid post by the great Eric Foskett, then found out over the next 30 years what environmental health was!

What is the biggest challenge in your job?

Finding the next contract or project and fitting it in to the diary amongst all the rest!

What do you like most about your job?

Working on the current contract or project

What do you like the least?

Having to work on the current contract or project when I'm thinking about how I am going to do the next one!

What single legislative change would make your job easier?

Removal of all taxation, accountancy and VAT paperwork requirements

What change would most benefit the environmental health profession?

If a lot more of us were better and more effective presenters and advocates (I include myself in that)

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Play guitar, watch reality TV shows and homeshopping channels, and pray for Leeds United to actually achieve something again.
