We are currently seeking a suitably qualified Environmental Health Officer to join our Trading Standards and Port Health Service as a Port/ Environmental Health Officer.
Southampton is the 3rd largest port in the UK operating 363 days a year. Southampton Port Health Authority is responsible for enforcement of environmental, public and animal health controls. This includes inspection and clearance of imported foods and official documents and inspection of merchant and passenger vessels for the issue of ship sanitation control/ exemption certificates.
We are a small team of experienced staff and set a high standard in service delivery.
You will be working between two locations – our main office at City Depot and at our Border Inspection Point within the dock estate. You must have a full clean driving licence along with a good level of fitness as the role involves travelling between our City Depot office and the Border Inspection Point plus travel to shipping berths and other locations throughout the Port Health Authority area. You will be required to access ships via ladders/gangways, jetties and working port berths carrying equipment associated with the role. Whilst on board ships you will need to be able to access all applicable levels and locations within the ship. Work at the Border Inspection Point involves manual handling of imported products, frozen, temperature controlled and ambient, as part of the inspection process.
You are expected to cover a shift pattern on a rota which includes weekday evenings and weekends for which a shift allowance is paid. Standby duties are also included within this shift pattern.
You will be able to work on your own initiative to deliver our objectives. We will expect you to use your expertise to support wider regulatory activity delivered by Southampton City Council at the Port.
Competency in food sampling and inspection work is essential.
