Salary Scale SCP52-55 (PO5) (£46,404 - £49,422)

Manchester Port Health Authority is looking to recruit a suitably qualified Chief Port Health Officer / Clerk to the Authority to be based at our office in Runcorn, Cheshire.

The Authority is responsible for undertaking Port Health responsibilities on the Manchester Ship Canal and River Weaver. The district covers more than 50 miles of waterway from Manchester, through to the sea at Eastham on the Wirral.

The Port of Manchester is evolving and changing to meet the needs of the shipping industry and customer needs. This includes the Port Salford Development and subsequent proposed Border Inspection Post. The Port Health Authority must rise to this challenge and continue to provide an effective and efficient service.

The successful candidate will have an up to date and comprehensive knowledge of the statutory background and operation of a Port Health Authority and possess a sound knowledge of imported food control. As the role encompasses that of Clerk to the Authority, it is essential that candidates have a working knowledge of the role of internal and external financial audit. A relevant management qualification or significant management experience is required.

Responsibilities of the Authority include: ship inspection; imported food control; infectious disease control; water quality monitoring; environmental protection; pest control; waste management and civil contingency planning.

The successful candidate will participate in a 24/7 standby/call out arrangement for which extra remuneration will be payable. A valid driving license and commitment to private car use is required and essential car user allowance applies.
