Port Health Assistant (Graduate Trainee)

Fixed Term Contract 18 Months

We are looking for an enthusiastic Environmental Health Graduate to fulfil the role of Port Health Assistant, working for the London Port Health Authority at both Tilbury Docks and London Gateway, which are located on the north bank of the river Thames in Essex.

The position is open to a graduate of the Environmental Health degree who has passed their academic course but has yet to complete the practical training element; ELP or PPP and is registered with the CIEH. Assistance will be provided to enable completion of the practical training element during the contract term.

The post will allow you to practice a wide range of imported food control work at London Gateway, the Port of London’s newest and expanding container terminal and in Tilbury Docks which caters for both bulk and containerised traffic. Both ports handle third country and community trade, with a wide range of foodstuffs. The port health staff operate in multi-skilled teams comprising of Port Health Officers, Official Veterinarians and Port Health Assistants. 

There is contractual paid weekend work of 1 Saturday in 3 in addition to a working 35-hour week.  Candidates will need to have a full driving licence and their own car as public transport to the place of work is not sufficient at present. Casual user allowance rates are paid for eligible in work journeys. The weekday hours are on a rotating shift pattern of early, day and late shifts of 0700 to 1430, 0900 to 1630 and 1130 to 1900 respectively with a 30-minute lunch break.

You should be able to communicate effectively with agents and importers, prioritise and organise your workload both for yourself and for the team. You will need computer skills for Microsoft office suite and training will be given for the specialist computer inventory systems used to control container movements and our internal management control system.
