Here at Barrow Borough Council we look after our employees and offer a place where people are proud to live and work. A better quality of life.

The Council is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to fill the above post in the Commercial Services Team. We are transforming our services to be more efficient and business-like and need your help to drive this forward.

The Borough of Barrow-in-Furness is situated at the southern tip of Cumbria, on the northern shores of Morecambe Bay and set against the spectacular backdrop of the English Lake District Mountains. It is surrounded by beautiful beaches and is a bustling Victorian town with a proud industrial heritage and a long association with shipbuilding and maritime activities. The area is perfect for people wanting an active lifestyle with easy access to beaches and the Lake District. The housing is second to none and very reasonably priced. The town has plenty to keep you busy in your role from approved food businesses, hotels and restaurants, industrial estates and leisure-based activities. The role is also commutable from the M6 and the surrounding areas with one of the most scenic journeys in the Country.

Working under the day-to-day direction of the Principal Environmental Health Officer (Commercial), you will be responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of standards in a wide range of activities including food safety, health and safety, public health and animal welfare licensing. Health and well-being activities are also within the remit of the post. You will be expected to manage a diverse caseload, serve legal notices and carry out prosecutions where necessary.

Training is actively encouraged within the Council and the post holder will have the opportunity to attain additional qualifications such as the NEBOSH diploma.

You must hold the Diploma or BSc/MSc in Environmental Health and be registered as an EHO with the Environmental Health Registration Board or Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland or the Higher Certificate in Food Control. It is essential you have experience of inspecting premises for compliance with environmental health legislation either as a trainee or qualified officer, taking appropriate enforcement action.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide information, advice and instruction in accurate spoken English is an essential requirement.

Applicants are strongly advised to use the criteria in the person specification as sub-headings in their application to make it clear how they meet each of the selection criteria.

The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme and will be required to obtain a Basic Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland.
