Role Purpose

Tower Hamlets is a fascinating borough, a multi-cultural community steeped in history. The contrasts and challenges in Environmental Health Commercial work range from the dozens of restaurants in the “Curry Capital” of Brick Lane, to the high-tech corporate world-wide financial institutions in Canary Wharf, employing thousands of people using the Services that Environmental Health is responsible for.

We are able to offer a range of career opportunities for those that have obtained their Food Hygiene Premises Inspection EHRB registration or equivalent, to inspect food premises. 

The Service operates with two distinct areas comprising of health and safety specialists and food safety specialists. We would like to keep these specialists but blur the edges enabling staff to work across areas when the need arises.

We are able to offer a 35 hour week with flexi-time (a maximum of two ‘flexi’ days can be taken in a four week period), structured training opportunities (CPD), excellent salaries an additional car user allowance, advisory and enforcement work and a minimum of 6 weeks paid leave a year     

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for a district covering all reactive and proactive food hygiene/food standards issues that may arise (depending on qualification)

This is a new post that has been created in the Service and the post holder will have a specific responsibility for the growing food markets within the Borough, working closely with Market Services, as a result you may be required to work at the weekend as required.  
You will also be involved in projects and other programmes of work across the whole borough.


Level 1 SO2 £31,953 – this level has been created for those applicants that have the EHRB registration or equivalent for Food Hygiene Premises Inspection.

Level 2 PO1 £31,953 -£35.070 - applicants must hold the EHRB registration or equivalent for Food Hygiene Premises Inspection with an endorsement for Food Standards Inspection.
