Calderdale is situated in Yorkshire nestling in the south Pennines. It is an area of rich cultural heritage, impressive architecture, stunning landscapes and charming towns and villages. With excellent road and rail links and within easy reach of Leeds and Manchester, Calderdale is a great place to live, work and visit.

We are seeking 3 Environmental Health Officers; two permanently to work in our busy Environmental Health team and one to work on a specific project for two years temporarily.

Permanent Post

If you are looking for a unique opportunity to gain experience and knowledge across the full range of traditional environmental health functions then you are looking at the right place.  Being a small metropolitan area we pride ourselves on maintaining a high quality service, not only across the traditional core functions such as food safety, health and safety and pollution control but also in areas such as animal welfare, housing standards, dog control, fly-tipping, private water supplies and general nuisance.

If you are keen, enthusiastic and looking for a challenge then this opportunity may be for you.   You will be required to work in any, or a combination any of the above areas and whilst experience in some of these areas would be useful it is by no means essential; for us motivation and commitment are more important attributes.   The service deals with a high volume of both reactive and proactive work and as such the successful applicant will be expected to manage a large workload, have the ability to plan and prioritise work, and be capable of resolving problems quickly and in a timely manner.

Temporary Post

This primary purpose of the role is to bring about environmental improvements in areas of the Borough which has seen higher than average levels of migration. The aim being to contribute to improved living conditions and the general wellbeing of residents in these localities.  It is envisaged that this will be achieved by a combination of engagement, negotiation, persuasion and enforcement.   The post holder will be responsible for surveying the area and investigating and resolving issues in relation to enviro- crime type activities; in particular those that are visually obvious on the streets and could, rightly or wrongly, be attributed to the effects of immigration into the area.

It will be important that the successful applicant will be able to show good levels of skill and experience in negotiation, inclusivity, partnership working and a flare for delivering at a community level to a mixed audience of residents and stake-holders from all ethnic groups.  Close working with third sector agencies (charities and community groups) will be seen as a must for this role.

Applicants for all the posts will need to have a degree, or diploma, in Environmental Health and be EHORB registered.  For an informal discussion about the above post, please contact Nicola Law, Senior Environmental Officer on 01422 392354.

Please indicate in your personal statement which vacancy you wish to apply for, referring to the post reference number.

Closing Date: Sunday 1st October 2017.

Interviews: w/c 9th October 2017.
